Texas Compassionate Use Act

The Texas Compassionate Use Act was signed into law by Governor Greg Abbot. It became effective June 1, 2015.  This little known bill is the first step to some form of legal marijuana being available in Texas. But don’t get too excited. It allows for only the low THC strains to be grown by licensed growers and sold only to a registered list of physicians.

The process itself is held back by unnecessary regulations. Currently it is being administered by the Department of Public Safety. DPS has been required to set up a computer system for the administration of the Compassionate Use Act. That was expected to be completed by the end of November 2016 but currently there is no news as to the status of the new system.

Importantly for people who are interested in cultivating the low THC marijuana, DPS will start accepting applications from growers in June 2017. The legislation directs DPS to license at least 3 applicants by September 2017.
